Sexual Re-Orientation
Sexual Reorienation is a process involving the changing of those who identify as homosexual or bi-sexual and converting them in a sense to heterosexuality. Re-orientation or Conversion Therapy is generally considered controversial, as well as the data used by those claiming successes have been dubious at best.
Sexual re-orientation differs from gender re-orientation where the person wishes to change sex based on with what sex they identify as, but rather the person who wishes to remain heterosexual, or wished to identify as heterosexual from their previous, bi-sexual or homosexual orientation.
It was Sigmund Freud who first mentioned the possibility of gender re-orientation, as well as mentioning the difficulty in accomplishing the task of re-orientating someone’s sexuality. He claimed that it was only possible in ‘unusually favorable conditions’.
Freud replied to write a letter, replaying to a mother who wanted her son to be cured of homosexuality in a very well documented case.
Freud stated that gays could rarely convince themselves, or be convinced that they would find heterosexual sex as pleasurable as homosexual intercourse. He found that most homosexuals wanted to have a heterosexual orientation due to secondary reasons; that is not to have heterosexual intercourse, but rather to avoid fear of social disapproval.
They also sought treatment to show that while they had tried to re-classify their sexual orientation, only as means to prove that it had invariably failed and then they could subsequently return to homosexuality
Mainstream medical organizations as well as scientific organizations claim that the use of conversion therapy is damaging to the individual as it not only fails in many instances leading to feelings of anxiety and depression. There are also documented cases of parents forcefully (in one case the parent used handcuffs to restrain their child) taking their children to evangelical camps meant to cure homosexuality and promiscuity among teens.
The other controversy is the mere idea of sexual re-orientation as it reinforces the idea to homosexuals and bi-sexuals that there is something inherently flawed as there appears – at least on the surface, to be cure for their problem. This makes many who already may feel insecure about their sexual orientation, having feelings of guilt, or anxiety regarding their orientation.
